A Tryst with Washington escort Marie Simone

Until recently, negative and often false stereotypes of sex work and sex workers have dominated the media and public discourse. We think it's vital that these stereotypes are deconstructed and stories about sex work are being told by sex workers themselves, rather than disconnected journalists. In this series, we chat to sex workers from across the globe to help you better understand all things sex work and how you can help. Today we chat to Washington escort Marie Simone about how she got started, voting and stigma.

Tell us your story, how did you get into the industry and what has your journey looked like thus far?

Short answer… student loans. Lol. I was about a month out from graduation and they send you a letter telling you how much you will own in 6 months… I was shocked, thought about going back to being a sugar baby and a friend told me this would be more my speed. And it WAS/IS! Lol. Best decision I’ve ever made. I love what I do, the people I get to meet and the places I visit is everything I’ve ever wanted.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I’m a big sport fan! I come from a sports loving and playing family. We had season tickets to football and constantly went to baseball and basketball games. Everyone in my family played a sport or 3. Lol. I ran track in high school and college. I’ve been playing golf since high school. Fun fact, I was on the golf team, and I still feel like I can’t play. Lol. Shopping, of course. I love to travel, so much so that I named my dog passport. HA! I like to cook… and eat! Reading has always been a love of mine, I’ve moved to audibles mostly but there’s nothing like opening a new book and cracking the spine. Plus the author can’t sign an ebook. Lol

As sex workers, we face several challenges in our line of work. What are some of the issues you care about, and how do you think your clients can help sex workers?

I am a big advocate of sex workers getting involved in politics. Voting is SOOOOOO important. My clients, they can help by voting for propositions that aid us, listening to what we need and financially supporting us.

Is there a book, tv show, or movie that has had a significant impact on your life? What was it, and what did it teach you?

Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Lol I saw that show super late after it came out and finally a portrayal of sex workers that’s realistic and not a savior piece meant to scare everyone out of becoming or enjoying one.

Why do you think it is important for sex work to be decriminalized and how do you think it will change the way you work?

When, not if, sex work becomes decriminalized, there will be a big shift in rates and an influx of people entering the industry, similar to the Onlyfans boom in 2020. But nothing will really change until the stigma surrounding the work is gone.

Is there anyone in the industry you consider a role model or someone you looked up to when you first started your journey?

I had a duo partner when I first started, she had been in the business for almost 10 years before we met. I learned sooooo much from her and we duo’d constantly. She’s since retired and I’ve yet to find a duo partner like her. Lol it’s a struggle

What kind of music are you currently listening to?

I love music and have a pretty wide variety old school R&B, jazz and good Hip hop. My favorite singer is Anita Baker. I like old Kanye West, Megan thee Stallion, Jill Scott, Coltrane, anything that Babyface or Raphael Saadiq touches and even some country artists.

What do you think the public should know about the sex industry and sex workers?

We are real and regular people. Someone you associate with is a sex worker and you probably don’t realize it.

What are your top three pieces of advice for workers just starting out?

Stop waiting for everything to be perfect and just do it! Don’t compare yourself to others. You have no idea what’s going on behind closed doors. Save as much as you can and don’t let lifestyle creep ruin your budget. The new income will burn a hole in your pocket, don’t spend it all, and get a financial planner and accountant ASAP! Don’t forget to pay your taxes.

What would your dream date look like?

My dream date would be… I have a few. Hahaha. A weekend date, Friday we arrive and have dinner, relax with a bubble bath and enjoy each others company, Saturday morning, after a leisurely breakfast, we play a round of golf, lunch, shopping, dinner and dessert in the suite. Sunday, spa date before we depart that night.

My favorite scent is: A fresh and perfectly cooked steak being walked to our table, lol no. YES!, but seriously. I really like Tom Ford Soleil Blanc

My favorite restaurant is: Del Friscos, but I love most steak houses. Lol

If you were to buy me a drink at a bar, you should buy me: An Old Fashioned with basil Hayden or a Maker’s Mark with Simply Lemonade for the simpler bars.

My favorite thing to be gifted is: Cash, lol I’m expanding my jewelry collection and love the personalization that comes from a greeting card with a hand written message inside. I keep them all.

A social cause I care about is: I’m a sucker for anything kids related. Lol
