Gabbie BamBam from Sex Worker Saturday reviews the graphic novel The Pro by Garth Ennis.
Garth Ennis’ prolific mind decided to take on crime with the help of a proSTITUTE. The Pro has been chosen among many of the deep-throated hopefuls down on their knees doing their part to help humanity.
This story begins with an intimate scene between the main character (she is never given an actual name) and her trick completing a transaction in an alleyway. Things go wrong when our main character decides to collect on her services rendered. We are given a glimpse into her world with the illustrations showing her picking up her baby from a long night's work, at three in the morning. Waking up to a loud noise and a screaming baby, we see our blonde haired heroine floating around confused as to where the noise is coming from. Trying to put the pieces together, she is introduced by her new gang of justice seeking friends; the League of Honor. She is offered an opportunity to fight crime and save humanity, the Pro decides she’s really not into it for the honor, she wants a paycheck!
After negotiating an appropriate dollar amount, the Pro grabs her new crime fighting threads and heads out with the pack to destroy another crime facilitating group the “Grammatical Gang of Grimeness”. Destroying the grammar gang, and pissing on one of the villain’s faces, the Pro consequently brings embarrassment and shame to the League of Honor. The LOH confronts the Pro on her unconventional crime fighting methods, as well as using her super power to help her finances and with her other party time gig of being a sex worker. The League is unsure she is the right fit for their group.
Will the Pro tame her sexual ways, deciding her sensuous life on the streets is not for her anymore, or will she forever remain a full service provider exploiting her new found super powers for financial gain and securing a prosperous future for her and her child? You will have to read the comic to find out!
I really enjoyed Ennis’ perspective and his unique take on social issues and stereotypes (“The Lime” character’s dialogue is hilarious at best). There is a clear view of how this woman lives and Ennis does a great job of depicting her apathetic attitude towards her actions. I love that Ennis decided to incorporate an anonymous “voyeur” or “viewer”, deciding she will be the greatest hero of our time. There is a bonus issue of the Pro after the end of the graphic novel where “the Pro” meets “the Ho '' where two sex workers bond over their shared confusions about receiving superhuman powers.
I give this comic a whole 4 out of 5 dildos.
