IDAHOBIT, Sex Work and Solidarity

. 8 min read

Hello my loves, your beloved editor Rory Rumble, reporting to you live! Today May 17th is IDAHOBIT (international day against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia) and we have a spate of new and delicious writing for you, but we also thought we’d take the opportunity to reintroduce some of the fantastic work of queer writers already featured here.

IDAHOBIT found its beginnings in 2005 Australia. Originally IDAHO, then IDAHOT in 2011, and now IDAHOBIT since 2018. May 17th was chosen to commemorate the 1990 WHO decision to remove homosexuality from the CoD (Classification of Diseases). While we’ve made many great strides towards freedom and equality, it’s no secret there are many more battles ahead. Particularly with the increase in conservative, reactionary ideology and terrifying governmental push to criminalise our existence, both as sex workers and queer people, globally.

Some of our favorite pieces from the last few years are:

Whore History with Old Pros: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera
Marsha moved to New York City in 1963, right after graduating high school, arriving in the city with a bag of clothes and fifteen dollars to her name. Sex work became her means of survival and she created family among other sex workers along Manhattan’s Christopher Street.
A Tryst With Montreal Escort Ezra
The threats sex workers face are not just from clients or individuals in society; the very system we live within is at the root of much of the violence we face.
RuPaul’s Bigotry is a Drag
A noteworthy portion of drag queens are sex workers and trans people, often being both. Drag Race has a history of refusing to allow trans contestants to participate and of whorephobic commentary.
Sex Workers and the Left: Pass The Mic
Leftists and non profits want sex workers on their boards to be seen not heard, to speak only when spoken to.
A Tryst With Long Beach’s Goddexx Haru Haku
“Finding community helped me to not only work through a lot of shame that I held around being a sex worker, but also to develop the skills and tools needed to engage with kink and in-person sex work in a safer and healthier way.”
Trans Masc Workers and the SWERF to TERF Pipleline
The gender politics of sex work are so much more complex than radical feminist groups would like to reduce them to, and transmasculine sex workers are a part of that.
Porn Didn’t Hurt You, Patriarchy Did
I’m never one to die on a hill defending cishet men, and let’s be clear, as we continue to unpack this you’ll see my defense is of sex workers, BUT, to lean into the argument at face value: what is the issue with partnered men watching porn?
A Tryst With New York Dominatrix Mx Tomie
“The interpersonal, emotional skills necessary as a domme was a big skill that even in my civilian life is pretty unrivaled. Specifically, I’ve developed a keen eye for submissive men and things that make men twitch.”
Bend and Slap: Dynamics, Gender, and Kink
or those who are looking to enter the wonderful world of kink it can be a frightening prospect. There is a vulnerability to putting yourself out there whether it’s a casual munch or a play party. What are the rules? What are the unspoken expectations and social dynamics?
How to Book a Transmasc Sex Worker
Lots of people have a type that they’re primarily attracted to, and there’s no shame in being particularly interested in transmasculine people.
A Tryst With Lexington Escort Dylan
I had always been curious about this sex work – I was lucky to, for whatever reason, keep out a lot of the negative messaging people around me growing up received about their sexuality.
“Uncloseted, but uncomfortable.” Sex work and family
I find the holidays hard. Lately, every time I go back home, I discover something else that makes me feel as though I don’t fit in. Being queer, being nonbinary, learning to be sex-positive…and, of course, being a sex worker.
A Tryst With Dallas Dominatrix Mistress Mia
When it comes to sex work, there’s no shortage of lessons to be learned about oneself, including what “sex”, “work” or even what the term “yourself” actually means. I’d have to say that it’s mostly taught me that there’s no wrong or right answer.
A Transformation: Finding My Masculinity as a FTM Sex Worker
I interviewed at my first whore house early in 2019. I was pre top surgery and early on Testosterone. The house head sat me down, giving my body a thoughtful once over. I had the standard bingo card full of baby trans guy traits
The Myth of Ageing Out of Sex Work
Many of us buy into the idea that we will eventually age out of sex work or that it is only possible for our careers to last for as long as we can pass for being in our 20s. Older sex workers may seem to be rare exceptions, even at porn events or sex worker social groups.
A Tryst With Raleigh NC escort Xan Tiago
Fast-Forward a couple more years and one pandemic later, I now found myself living with my partner at our apartment. I started posting on OnlyFans; slowly learning how to build my own platform
Activism Means Standing Up For Yourself, Not Just Others
I was now being referred to as a sex work activist, and it made me feel empowered. Through standing up for myself, I had in turn stood up for my community. Through speaking my truth – and doing it unapologetically.
An Ally’s Guide to Using the Right Words for the Sex Industry
This is a blog for anyone who is a sex worker ally, or would like to be. Although having your heart in the right place is important, there’s more to it. The terms you use to talk about sex work have a huge impact on how you and the world view our work.
A Tryst With Philadelphia Escort Tzipporah, AKA Zip
Plenty of sex workers have not-so-fun stories about getting started ... Instead, ask us about our favorite movies, music, food, flowers, etc! That is a much better way to learn about us as individuals
The Pressure to Pass
Trans sex workers have a smaller pool of potential clients than cis sex workers do, due to the way trans people are viewed as a sexual niche. Although our overall client-base is smaller, we gain a type of client who is interested in trans people specifically and often fetishizes us: Chasers.
Blood, sweat and underwire an obituary for my breasts
In my work as an escort, I’m constantly meeting new people and seeing them naked. You might assume that this means I’m totally body-positive, but it hasn’t worked out that way.
Do We Age Out Of Sex Work?
I don’t think there’s a set age when sex work suddenly becomes impossible, but there’s an age where it gets harder, and it’s different for everyone.
Sex Work and Folk Devils
Since the pandemic induced boom in online content creation, the media has taken a keen interest in sex work, and as a result, us as sex working individuals. We do make great clickbait after all.
