How to Choose a Cam Site for Work

How to Choose a Cam Site for Work

. 11 min read

Trying to decide which cam site is right for you? Each site is different, and there are plenty of factors to consider—from your safety, to your style and situation. This article breaks down some key features to look for when choosing a cam site to sign up to. Whether you are feeling like a fish out of water, or already have a little bit of knowledge behind you—this article has vital information for you!

First things first, no matter which site you settle on, you will need to provide legal identifying information to prove your age and to receive earnings. A harsh reality of being a live-stream sex worker is having to accept that your stream may be screenshot or recorded at any time without your consent.

Don't do or say anything on camera that you are uncomfortable with having on the internet. Depending on which country hosts your live-stream site, you may be protected by anti-piracy laws. These laws can be a big help and shouldn't be overlooked when choosing a site, but they don't always successfully cover all bases.

Two of the main safety resources that are applicable to online sex workers hosting content and live streams on adult sites include GDPR and DMCA.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is EU-based and protects individuals’ rights in regards to personal data. It includes the right to access, modify, remove, and prevent the processing of that data. This mainly applies to EU residents, but is still honoured if the site’s company isn't based in the EU.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a US law which provides copyright owners a process to request content be taken down if it is being used without permission. A DMCA takedown is a practical step before considering legal action and applies if the domain operates under US law.

Even when you give a site consent to host your content, it does not automatically have the right to use your content elsewhere—unless you have given explicit permission to do so. Always check the live-stream site’s terms in the Terms of Service (ToS) fine print thoroughly!

Authenticity of streaming sites

When researching potential sites, be careful of inauthentic, fake sites posing as legitimate big-name live-stream sites. Certain sites may be harder to discern than others, but using a popular search engine like Google you will get better results. It's safer to use popular search engines for more accurate results in this case (despite their tracking methods), as you want to avoid accidentally signing up to a fraudulent site and uploading your sensitive personal information. It might help to type "official" next to the name of the cam site you are looking up in the search bar. Refer to digital sex work forums for cam models or ask other workers you know IRL for advice.

Studio vs Independent?

As you read through cam sites online, you will notice that some will be described as "studios". Make sure you read the information very carefully on each site; many sites will offer independent and studio account sign-up options—some of which are described below.

Studio sites offer either physical or virtual studios. Studios will give you a schedule with shifts for when you need to stream, and will take a higher percentage of your earnings than if you were to work independently, to account for setting up your profile and directing traffic to you.

Virtual studios act as an agency to recruit performers online. You work from home and usually are the one responsible for supplying your own equipment. They are partnered with one or multiple adult websites and may offer training, promises of high traffic streams, and tips on how to keep a healthy flow of customers—but this is not always as advertised and often sounds better than the reality.

Physical studios usually supply performers with a dedicated area to stream from which may include lighting, a webcam, internet connection, and sometimes a computer. This can be a good option if it’s locally accessible to you and/or if you don't have your own space available to work from.

The independent route leaves many options open. You are not bound to schedules or contracts other than abiding by site content rules, and you get to keep a larger portion of your earnings. Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) between you and the cam site are much less murky than with studios. Cam sites should clearly state the percentage they keep before you sign up and provide any documents. You get to receive your payouts directly to your bank account or via the payment method that you consent to, rather than having a studio act as a third party. You are entirely responsible for keeping and maintaining a schedule of your own convenience, and get full autonomy to earn without the stress of achieving agency KPIs. It can be very lonely sometimes being an independent cammer, and an optimal set up from the get-go can be expensive.

Physical studio safety

Some studios are notorious for being unsafe working environments (as is the reality for much in-person sex work) for many reasons. Others may pose falsely as an independent model sign-up, when in reality they are actually providing studio-only contracts.

Speak to workers you know who may have first-hand experience working with them. There are thousands of posts online on sex worker community forums and Reddit threads with reviews from other workers, where you can also post questions to seek more specific answers.

There are often strict rules in place for cam models wanting to transfer from studio to independent cam work. You will likely be barred from signing any independent contracts before the studio you are affiliated with releases you from your preexisting contract with them. Many, many performers online have reported lengthy, unfair struggles to end contracts with studio agencies, leaving them no option to freely enter independent online cam work.

Payment processors

It is important to check what payment services are available for the cam site you are considering, as not all payment processing services will be compatible with your country of residence. Be particularly wary of choosing cash or cheque payment as a payout option which some sites do offer, as there is no guarantee it will reach you safely.

Depending on the payout option you choose, you will need to reach a certain amount of earnings before you can request a payout. Usually, a larger sum is needed to initiate a direct wire to a bank account, as opposed to using a third-party processor to receive funds. Third-party global processors also charge additional fees for processing and to hold a bank account with them. They can be a good option, but you will need to provide legal documents and await approval when opening an account.

Like always, research reviews from workers online—especially those based in your home country—and be vigilant when reading through processors’ T&Cs to be sure you aren't sprung with hidden fees. Some global banking companies offer purchase of a physical bank card that you can use to withdraw funds at participating ATMs.

Site traffic, timezones & VPNs

Utilising a website traffic analyser site will give you detailed website reports simply by providing the accurate domain name for the site you are wanting results for. This is a fantastic and fast way to determine site trends such as visitor counts, visitor location, peak engagement times and duration of each visit. This data is very useful when determining your available hours to work online. For instance, if you are in Australia and want to stream between the hours of 11:00a.m.-3:00p.m. your target audience will likely be users in America who are active online from 9:30p.m.-1:30a.m. Comparing these hours with analytic results across live-stream sites will help you pick a site with traffic during times that line up with your streaming schedule.

If you want to broadcast your stream according to audiences in your timezone but are wanting to implement privacy restrictions to certain areas, there are cam sites that offer geoblocking. You can opt to block an entire country, certain states or in some instances even specific towns or cities. However, the more specific your geoblocking choices, the less likely they are to be effective. Choosing to block a country will have a higher success rate than narrowing it down to blocking cities, towns or suburbs. Depending on the location you are wanting to block, you are at risk of losing a percentage of your audience.

It is important to note that customers might bypass geoblocking restrictions by using a VPN, but a VPN can work in your favour too. Not only can a VPN be used to help hide your IP address which is hugely important for your privacy and safety, but you can choose to connect to a VPN server in another country if desired. Utilising a VPN alongside practicing other simple cybersecurity tips will give you the security of knowing that you are implementing invaluable methods to keep your identity safe online. For example, are you based in the UK and working in the city doing a public-facing day job? Invest in a wig, do a makeup style that is only reserved for your online persona, don a totally different clothing style and connect to a VPN server in Australia! There are plenty of Brits with thick accents Down Under, so you won't be out of place.

Appearance and services

A very important part of the puzzle to consider is what type of services you will be offering alongside your choice of appearance. If you are opting for an intimidating look and are wanting to offer fetish services, you need to be sure that you are offering kinks that aren't prohibited by the site you choose to work on or your account might be banned. Few sites cater to more extreme BDSM performers, while many if not most host “girl next door” style classic vanilla masturbation shows.

If you are a trans model it might be best to find sites that have a high popularity ranking amongst trans performers. Male performers, generally speaking, do better for traffic and earnings on male-centric cam sites. If a site is lacking in your style of performance and appearance, it's still worth giving it a go if you are polished and confident! There could be a whole untapped market of frequent viewers that are wanting someone different to grace their screen on their favourite site. Choose to fit in or stand out. You may have to experiment between a few looks or sites before you find what fits best.

Couples and duos

If you are wanting to live stream with another performer, they will need to be approved by your cam site before they can perform alongside you. Various sites have options for couples and duos who plan to stream together; you may be required to select a “couples” account when signing up to the site. It’s up to the two of you to determine how to divide your shared earnings between yourselves after they are paid into your chosen account. Some sites require you to open two separate standalone accounts and link them later on before streaming. Payouts for this method differ across cam sites. I have also seen options that allow a main performer/account holder to add a secondary performer option that doesn't require an active account or separate profile, so co-stars can join you casually without too much hassle. They will still need to provide legal documents, but dividing earnings will be the sole responsibility of the main account holder.

Toys!

Interactive toys are a great option to consider adding to your list of services. They have been around for a long time now and have proven to be a captivating option for your audience. Interactive cam site toys are an excellent way to boost your income while giving customers the ability to feel more connected to you via the digital realm of sexual entertainment. There are multiple ways to programme vibration responses, such as “the higher the tip from a customer the stronger the vibration”, or providing different vibration patterns depending on the tip amount you set for unlocking. Because of the fun, intimate nature of streaming with interactive toys, your audience will be more inclined to tip you to join in on the novelty and are likely to want to stay around to watch your stream for longer! Many brands have sex toys that are compatible with most major cam sites. Not all interactive toys are tip-activated, some are only able to be controlled long distance—but that doesn't mean that you can't come up with incentives for your customers to unlock access to controlling your device. That's how we used to do it back in the day before interactive and long-distance play! Be sure to check what is and isn't compatible with your cam site before committing to a purchase.

Token Sites vs PPV Sites

Token-based or “freemium”, “free” or “public” sites usually have a higher rate of traffic, equalling more views and a higher likelihood of faster earnings. The trade off for this is the high rate of competition you will need to work alongside, and you need to be comfortable performing in an open free chatroom stream. Most sites have restrictions in regards to what you are allowed to do in a public chatroom. Depending on the site, private shows will be available as an upgrade option on freemium sites for customers who are wanting to pay to see more! Gold shows are a popular way to earn a bigger chunk of money. The model will set a money goal amount and when their audience tips enough to meet the goal, they will perform a promised act/service. Gold shows like this are an option on many private sites as well, but may not be unlocked until you have had an active account for a certain amount of time.

Pay-per-view (PPV) or “premium” or “private” sites are private pay-per-minute shows. Some sites offer customers the option to pay for a block of time to be used  over various sessions with you, or in one go. Most PPV sites have the option between at least two different types of private shows—group shows which are host to multiple pay-per-minute customers all watching at once, or VIP one-on-one private shows with only one customer watching. VIP shows are usually charged at a slightly higher rate by models. Similar to token sites, you will have a public chatroom that you spend time in for free between paid shows and performances, but the majority of nudity or sexual acts are generally not permitted in the free chat. You will find that site traffic is less than on public token sites. However, most models will find the main differences are higher tips from customers as well as longer, more intimate one-on-one shows, meaning a higher chance of regulars, but slower money than on a public site.

Some private sites have an optional feature to provide private dual cam-to-cam streams with a customer, for which models can set a higher rate. This is popular amongst customers, however you may be witness to any number of things you did not consent to, so do keep that in mind. If needed, you can terminate the stream at any point. Ensure to read the T&Cs about chargebacks and other relevant information regarding lost connections or terminated live streams as each site will take different measures.

I truly hope all the info I've provided has been of assistance! So often I've found that cam model resources are broken up in ways that leave many specific yet important general questions unanswered, hence why I wanted to compile this very general yet informative guide.
