A Tryst with New York escort Mia Luca

A Tryst with New York escort Mia Luca

One of the hardest things to endure as a sex worker in 2021 is the stigma formed by false narratives and assumptions about our work. Each week we chat to a worker on Tryst to help you better understand their stories and how you can help. This week we spoke to New York escort Mia Luca about dating as a sex worker, how she got started and what she's currently listening to.

Tell us your story, how did you get into the industry and what has your journey looked like thus far?

I have a handful of girlfriends that have been in SW for awhile. They would talk about their work life and it always peaked my interest and felt like something I would enjoy doing. I spent a few months reading twitter, reddit, and escort ads until I felt ready. My journey so far has been really wonderful. I have really kind and interesting clients, built amazing relationships, and created the flexible and fun schedule I have always dreamt of.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?

-I go buck wild at the farmers market, I am a sucker for any artisan jam or cheese. Local honey- I swoon!

-Interior design. I love “fixer upper projects.”  I pride myself on being resourceful, finding beautiful antiques in strange places. Currently inspired by terra cotta and limewash.

-Lots of plants, lots of picnics, lots of spontaneous trips and lots of wine nights with my friends giggling and dancing around the kitchen.

-I just signed up for ceramic classes!

What kind of music are you currently listening to?

Spotify 2020 tells me Brent Faiyaz is my most played followed closely by Otis Redding and Khruangbin. I listen to a lot of oldies and soul. Throw some Led Zeppelin at me any day though and I will be elated.

Where do you think that stigma around sex work comes from?

I am not sure where to start? Societal perceptions? How sex workers are seen in the eye of the law? I have too much to say- happy to talk about this issue at lengths, book me and I can share my perspective.

What's one change you would like to see happen within the sex industry?

Decriminalization

Dating as a sex worker is often difficult. What has been your experience with this?

It's been challenging. The first person I dated while doing SW was awful. He was deeply insecure and projected a lot of false narratives on me and his ideas of SW. I have a hard time gauging telling someone from the jump so they know what they are getting into, and they don't feel surprised. Then I grapple with disclosing to someone who might not be a consistent person in my life. I am still learning what feels best.

Is there a book, tv show or movie that has had a major impact on your life? What was it and what did it teach you?

I think we can all agree that the Chef’s Table episode with Jeong Kwan was profound and beautiful. (Season 3, Episode 1 if this peaks your interest).

All of Anthony Bourdain's TV shows with a special nod to India. I convinced my school and parents to let me live in India for a few months when I was 17 (inspired by both teen angst and Bourdain’s episode on Bombay). My time in India was incredible and lit a fire under my big beautiful rump to travel as often as possible.

Trying to embody these words by Bourdain

"I travel around the world, eat a lot of shit, and basically do whatever the fuck I want"

We know sex workers are experiencing censorship online, what have your experiences been with this?

Photos being removed on various platforms, ads randomly deleted, and shadowbanned.

When you're having a bad day, how do you make yourself feel better?

Intentional alone time, a hot shower, an orgasm, and a loooong nap.

Do you have any advice for workers who are just starting out?

Utilize Twitter & invest in good photos for your ads.  If you are on a budget, get a camera online, use a self timer and return the camera for the refund. Twitter can help create an amazing and supportive community, and it's how a lot of clients get to see more of your day to day passions. If the client is drawn to the things you enjoy, more than likely its clients you will have an authentic connection with.

What is your favorite thing to be gifted? A gift card that helps fund my travels (airbnb, delta airlines, etc) or an etsy.com gift card.

My favorite restaurant is: Los Tacos Number 1. Otherwise I seek out Vietnamese food or Omakases. Very eager to try Blue Hill. (Would love for you to introduce me to your favorite cozy bar that makes a mean Negroni or Manhattan).

My favorite scent is: Earl Grey tea, and Sagebrush

My happy place is: swimming in calm warm water, or a farmers market
