Thanks for joining us for our interview series, 'A Tryst With'. In this instalment, New York Escort Mia Betancourt joins us to discuss boundaries, beauty, and enthusiasm.

Can you tell us your ‘origin story’ as a sex worker?

During my college days in Philadelphia, I stumbled upon a local university paper. Hidden within its pages was a mysterious little paragraph that instantly captivated my imagination. I called the number, set up an interview and much to my delight I found that it was a position for a Phone Sex Operator. The position was incredibly rewarding, offering flexible shifts and enticing incentives. What truly amazed me was the way my creativity was encouraged to flourish. Surrounded by fantastic co-workers, I felt like I belonged. Despite the job title, it was a professional, safe, all-female environment.

While all of my calls were good, nothing thrilled and captivated me like the domination material I received when it was time to 'graduate' to more intense calls. I delved into that material with such dedication that domme calls became my specialty and passion. I made so much money, but we all know how it goes when you get a taste of something that opens your nose so very wide … We go looking for more. Around that time Craigslist, Backpage, etc were all the rage and so after extensive research and many conversations with classmates and roommates, I was introduced to a few agencies and my journey truly began. I was fortunate to experience the best of both worlds — the vanilla side and the more adventurous, kinky side of being a working girl.

When you started in the industry, what did you find was a big learning curve for you? Conversely, was there anything you took to like a duck to water?

A crucial lesson I learned was the importance of setting boundaries to maintain my peace and privacy. Initially, I made myself too accessible, thinking it was the key to success. However, the constant barrage of phone calls and time-wasters drove my anxiety through the roof. I realized that to protect my mental health, I needed to control my availability. Once I got into a good work life balance, things really began to excel for me.

On the flip side, reading people and anticipating their non-verbal cues has always been my superpower. Body language is my first and most trusted language. People reveal so much more with their bodies and eyes than they ever do with their words. I thrive on noticing the little details that others might overlook. In this industry, being hyper-observant is crucial, not just for safety but because the magic lies in the subtleties.

It's in the sparkle in a client's eyes when they talk about something they love, the shift in their breathing when a particular song plays, or the way their pupils dilate when they see their favorite color on me. These small, telling signs have brought me more blessings and joy than I can count.

Has your work influenced your sexuality or the way you view sexuality in general?

I definitely gained a deeper understanding of human sexuality and how it is often perceived through a lens of strength and dominance, but I found that beneath that exterior lies a profound beauty that is deeply vulnerable and intoxicating. This beauty is not just in the physicality of people, but it’s their emotional and psychological landscapes that make their expressions of sexuality uniquely captivating to me.

At the heart of sexual beauty is vulnerability. Society often pressures individuals to maintain a façade of invulnerability, but when they allow themselves to be open and emotionally expressive in front of me, it reveals a depth of character that is truly mesmerizing. This vulnerability is seen when people share their fears, desires, and insecurities with me, creating a connection that is intimate and authentic. The courage it takes for someone to lower their defences and expose their true selves is a powerful testament to their strength and humanity.

Sex workers often experience different kinds of discrimination, is there anything in particular you wish people knew the full impact of?

Discrimination in general is a nasty killer. The overall discrimination against sex workers not only destroys our families and lives, but also makes it exceedingly difficult for us to navigate everyday existence. This stigma marginalizes us, often leading to social isolation, economic hardship, and emotional distress. While all humans engage in actions that may not always be considered “right”, these should not permanently define or stigmatize them. Everyone deserves compassion and understanding, and no one should be judged solely by their profession or past choices. The humanity of sex workers should be acknowledged and respected, allowing them to live without the burden of undue prejudice.

What has sex work taught about beauty standards?

Beauty is inherently subjective, with standards that constantly evolve and take on countless forms. Attempting to conform to these ever-changing ideals is often futile. Instead, I embrace the elements of trends that captivate me, and reinterpret them to align with my unique vision. By marketing in a way that enhances and complements my own aesthetic, I have discovered that I can thrive regardless of prevailing beauty standards.

What has your experience been like with the sex work industry at large as a curvy provider?

There is a lot of discrimination against curvy women, especially in this industry. I frequently encounter it online, in comments, on forums, and the rare direct emails from people venting their frustrations about my weight. Refusing to see a client can sometimes reveal their fatphobic attitudes, and when it happens, it can be quite disheartening.

Overall, I can say my positive experiences far outweigh any negative ones I've encountered. As a curvy woman, I understand that my size can influence the number and type of clients who reach out to me. Initially, this was also disheartening, but I decided it's best not to entertain anyone who isn't genuinely enthusiastic about me.

What’s an aspect of being a sex worker that you really love?

I truly enjoy the flexibility and opportunities that sex work affords me. In the past, I managed to maintain a full-time job while still attending to my clientele before or after hours. Even when I was not employed full-time or found myself between jobs, I was still able to enjoy the best of both worlds. When business is thriving, I can travel or invest more in my photoshoots. I never have to tell my family or friends that I cannot be somewhere, because I have both the time and the means to accommodate my personal and professional life, unlike the constraints of a conventional, "vanilla" lifestyle.

Is there a type of client who seeks you out that you really enjoy seeing?

My favorite type of client by far has been the "nerd," and I use that term affectionately. These clients tend to be slightly apprehensive and nervous initially, but they blossom into such beautiful and well-rounded individuals once they feel comfortable. They have always been respectful of my time and boundaries. Beyond that, their intelligence keeps me entertained even after our time together has ended. I've never been bored, and they've consistently introduced me to new places and experiences. There are a few that I always make time for, no matter what I have going on, because they are just that special to me.

You provide kinky services! What are some of your favourite kinds of sessions?

My favorite experiences are when I get to take on a dominant role. During the booking phase, I ask a lot of questions to craft a customized and titillating experience. I enjoy ensuring that my partner is overwhelmed and delighted through all six senses, and I love achieving this when I am in control. I find pegging to be a delightful reversal of roles that feeds my dominant personality. For a moment, I can experience the best of both worlds, embodying both male and female perspectives. It allows me to provide pleasure in a way that feels taboo yet isn't in essence. It's definitely like walking a fine line between two distinct worlds. However, don't get it confused — I can embrace a more "vanilla" approach and truly enjoy that as well.

Can you tell us about what you like to do outside of work?

Outside of being Mia Betancourt, I actively apply my psychology degree to make a meaningful impact in my community. I regularly volunteer at food banks and animal shelters, and during the holiday season I dedicate my time to senior living centers, bringing cheer to those who might otherwise feel neglected. In addition, I am passionately developing my own bath and apothecary brand, which will soon be available both online and at various pop-up events throughout the year.

When I'm not volunteering or working on my brand, I prioritize self-care and relaxation, often finding solace at the nearest pool. Swimming has become my sanctuary, providing me with inner peace and a wellspring of creativity. The laps not only rejuvenate my spirit but also leave me brimming with fresh ideas. It's my go-to method for alleviating stress and dispelling negative or stagnant energy.

One sex tip I think everyone should know is: Asking what your partner likes and dislikes.
The best way for a client to win me over is: Gifts and fine dining are my favorites. I also love to travel.
My favorite lingerie brand/designer is: Honey Birdette.
I’m weirdly attracted to: My neighbors Bichon. I want a little dog sooo bad.
My favorite everyday pleasure is: Shopping.
