A Pro's Guide to the Best Condoms
Sex workers are experts on condoms
Workers of all kinds are always the best people to ask about the tools of their trade. So when it comes to condoms, sex workers are ideal to recommend their preferred brands. After all, we use them every day that we work!
Condom usage rates are falling worldwide, which puts large swathes of the population at risk of STIs and unwanted pregnancy. We want to show you that using condoms is sexy, easy, and fun so that you never need to feel awkward asking your partner to use one.
I asked sex workers of all stripes and shades about the condoms they like to use during work and play.
What are the benefits of using condoms?
Condoms are a barrier method–they stop fluid exchange during sex. Using a barrier method helps to keep your sexy play safer; the last thing you want to do when you’re in the moment is worry. Condoms are cheap, easy to use, and widely available, which makes them one of the methods to keep you as safe as possible from pregnancy and the only method to keep you safer from some STIs (sexually transmitted infections.) Condoms are up to 98% effective if used correctly, so make sure you understand how to use them!
Types of condoms and sizes
Condoms come in many varieties, from standard latex to latex-free condoms made from nitrile, lambskin, polyurethane, or polyisoprene. There are 2 main kinds of condoms: internal and external. The most widely used is external, meaning it goes over the penis during penetration, and that’s what we will be discussing here! External condoms come in a variety of sizes, so make sure you choose the best fit to prevent slippage and keep things as safe and as comfortable as possible.
Choosing a condom
When it comes to choosing a condom, sex worker Chasing Morgan says: “It depends on your anatomy. If you’re wearing the condom, prioritize fit and sensitivity. Do your research on what works for your body. If you’re being penetrated, focus on understanding your microbiome and which ingredients don’t cause irritation. Either way, expect some trial and error.”
So, try a bunch! Research means experimenting, observing, and trying something new based on those observations. Communicate your learnings with your sexy partner, and research some more.
What are sex workers’ favourite condoms?
I asked a bunch of sex workers which condoms they use and why, and here are their favourite condoms.
Sax Condoms
Sax condoms are made from latex and are available from their website. Jessica Fox says they are “easy to buy in bulk,” and have a “full size range” for all your needs. You can find as few as 12 and as many as 144 condoms in a single box! They offer every size from ‘closer’ to ‘max fit’, so their range has a condom for every body.
Four Seasons Naked
With the tagline, “like wearing nothing at all,” Four Seasons Naked is another brand of condoms made from natural latex rubber. They are very thin, providing plenty of sensation for the wearer, and they come in a big range of sizes. You can buy them in bulk from their website too!
“They don't reek of latex, and they’re thin enough so you don't lose sensation–I want to feel what’s under there!!! They of course work well with Sliquid: the best lube of all time!” - Mylah (See our lube blog post!)
Okamoto
“It practically hugs him like it’s got feelings,” said Niko Delevingne of Okamoto’s Zero/One condom.
With one of the thinnest condoms on the market, Okamoto is a Japanese brand that prides itself on their high quality and dependable condoms. They have a large range of sizes and varieties so that you can find the ideal fit and function for you.
Ansell Skyn
Ansell’s Skyn condoms came in a resounding first with full service workers. They were recommended so many times, I could barely keep track of the compliments. These condoms are latex-free. Made from polyisoprene, they are soft and ultra-thin.
Ivy said, “They provide more sensation and chafe less compared to latex condoms… Great for high volume full service sex work! Nothing worse than getting sore part way through a busy shift. A good option if you have sensitive holes.”
“They work with my body chemistry–no irritation, no pH disruption, and they don’t dry out,” said Chasing Morgan.
AA said that Skyn are, “easy to put on, and the lube doesn't get tacky over time.”
With a huge variety of condoms on the market, it can be hard to know which might be right for you when it comes to fit, form, and function. Sex workers know condoms. We have experience choosing the best condoms for whatever type of play you might want to indulge in. I hope that these recommendations from the professionals help you to have hotter, safer sex.
