A Tryst With Sydney Escort Vivienne Law
It's time for another instalment in our sex worker interview series, A Tryst With... We're joined this time by Sydney escort Vivienne Law.
What has your path looked like on your journey to where you are now as an escort?
Wow, where to start… I was 18 when I broke up with my highschool sweetheart and not long after I was using dating sites to meet strangers. Online dating was still taboo at the time, but it felt exciting to meet people from all walks of life. There was also a short period of sugaring and dating men over double my age. Overall, those years gave me a wealth of knowledge and insight about life, career, and sex outside my scope, it’s not surprising that I felt curious to explore escorting, which became the start of Vivienne Law.
My client base grew quickly and within a year, I was touring domestically and internationally. In 2019 I decided to resign from my hospitality job to become full-time Viv, which gave me freedom, security, and space to explore, study, and grow as a person.
It’s now been over 7 years since I started and I’m no longer escorting full-time as I transition into yoga, holistic health, and bodywork. I still love escorting and continue meeting clients when the times are aligned. My experience as an escort has definitely given me the skills and intuition to understand the human psyche as well as dive deep into understanding myself. What is most potent from my journey is the power of human connection.
Can you tell us some benefits and drawbacks of working in the industry?
I definitely love being my own boss and escorting has given me freedom and flexibility to work, study, and take care of my health and well-being. I’m grateful to have had the opportunities to travel around Australia and overseas, further expanding my experience of the world. Financial freedom has allowed me to help my family through troubled times a few years back as well as buying my first property in 2021. The flexibility also allows me to delve into my passions such as yoga, spirituality, holistic health and bodywork.
Another benefit would be the wonderful connections made through escorting. I believe there’s value in having a space to put aside the masks we wear in life and to just be our authentic selves with openness, understanding, and compassion. I’ve seen this to be so liberating for clients but also for myself.
A drawback would be the stigma and misconceptions about the industry. Luckily my friends and family are super supportive of me, however there have been instances where it has not been received well. In recent times, I feel quite comfortable mentioning my career path when asked, but it is exhausting having to gauge the right situation and timing.
What are three things you would have loved to have known going into the industry?
The first would be to trust my intuition. Over the years, it is what has kept me safe both physically, mentally, and emotionally. The second would be to not allow the work to define and validate me. I love to give and accommodate the needs of my clients but over-giving can lead to a feeling of emptiness, burn out, and resentment. The third would be that success does not come in the form of material gain or money. It’s so easy to compare ourselves to others and define who we are with what we own. However, along my journey I’ve realised it’s all about feeling at peace within myself – naturally the feeling of success and contentment will be there.
What are some skills you’ve developed through your time as a sex worker? What are their broader applications in the civvie world?
My time as a sex worker has allowed me to branch out and start a new business in a different industry. As mentioned, I started a new career in bodywork which also requires a brand, marketing and website, financial and time management, and communication skills.
On a deeper level, sex work has allowed me to excel in the art of touch which is relevant for bodywork. Language is a great form of communication but it can be limited. A loving, compassionate and genuine touch is what allows depth, safety and deep connection to occur in any relationship.
How have you been welcomed or supported by your sex industry peers?
Escorting can feel quite lonesome, especially during tours. It’s been so great to connect over twitter and instagram where we can meet up and give each other tips on safety, travel, and recommendations for our client dates. I simply love the open-mindedness of the sex industry peers – there’s rarely any topic that is too taboo!
What has sex work taught you about beauty standards?
I remember going into the industry feeling that I would struggle to charge my rates because I wasn’t tall or super slim with blonde hair or blue eyes. Looks may be the first impression, however clients come back because of the beauty within the personality – when someone exudes that inner glow. This is often unlocked by confidence, self-care and being your authentic self. Trying to be and look like someone else is not sustainable in the long term.
What's one stereotype that you wish clients knew the reality of?
A stereotype I’ve encountered is that escorts must disconnect from their bodies and put on a facade or persona to be able to do the work we do. From my experience, creating an enjoyable date for a client requires a level of compassion, empathy, and giving of my undivided attention – which becomes quite effortless when I’m being my authentic self. I’ve noticed some clients think we feel forced to be with them, but if there’s manners and respect then I genuinely want to be there!
What was your experience like growing up in Australia?
I had the typical Asian upbringing in the suburbs where there were high expectations to work hard and do well in my studies. There was a lot of anxiety to be a high achiever as I was conditioned that getting into university, making lots of money, and buying a house were essential for survival and happiness. I know this isn’t the case now but I definitely feel grateful as it’s led to me being ambitious, fulfilling my passions, and having a strong work ethic.
You recently moved from the city to the mountains. What do you love about your new location? How has this change affected your life and the way you work?
Yep, I moved there in late 2021 and I really love my house in the mountains, I often call it a sanctuary. It’s a lovely cottage surrounded by trees and native wildlife, a place where I can take the time to ground and connect with myself. It has such an inviting, safe, and cosy feel to it!
Moving here has given me a great work-life balance. I dedicate a couple of days a month to escorting which means I can make time for my other business, spiritual practices, hobbies as well as time with family and friends. This allows me to show up to my clients as my best self.
You've studied bodywork and Tantra. How does this inform your work as an escort?
I feel studying bodywork and Tantra has strengthened my client relationships. In the Eastern philosophies, there’s an emphasis on the interconnectedness of life and practising a level of awareness and presence which transcends our suffering. Touch, eye contact, and intimacy is a universal need which enhances the love and connection within us, and it’s been magical to share this newer side of me with my clients.
There’s so much detachment from our bodies in this modern world, where there’s pressure to be someone based on societal norms. I truly enjoy creating a space and giving someone the opportunity to be seen, heard and accepted for who they are. Some of my clients have been going on their own inner journey to find love and security within themselves so they can live their best lives.
What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge after a long week?
My favourite way to relax and recharge is to be at the sanctuary in the mountains with my dog, Minty. I also dedicate time to practising yoga and meditation, reading books, playing piano, and simply enjoy being in my own company. It’s a bonus when I’m with loved ones.
The way for a client to win me over is: respect, open-mindedness and a great smile.
I get a big thrill out of: synchronicities in life and effortless connections.
My favorite lingerie brand is: La Perla and Studio PIA.
The makeup item I swear by is: Too Faced and Hourglass (travel sizes are great!)
My social handles are: @viv__x on instagram and @viviennelaw_x on twitter and viv__x on patreon.
