This week on our sex worker interview series, A Tryst with, we talk to Las Vegas escort Sophia Valentine about how she got started, her experiences with escort agencies vs working independently and what she didn't expect going into the industry.
Tell us your story, how did you get into the industry and what has your journey like thus far?
One of my good friends actually was working here in Las Vegas but on her own CC walking around the strip from one hotel to the next and I knew plenty of women who did go that route but I did it very differently. I actually had a great job at a hotel here in Vegas but unfortunately after losing a couple of my grandparents, my job wouldn't give me the time off. I wasn’t going to miss my grandpa's funeral but it did lead to me being let go. I also knew a girl who worked as a phone girl for one of the escort companies. I told her I was interested and I started with them soon after. Not knowing enough about the life, I did run into some scary situations and even one which was life threatening and traumatic. I worked for about 5 different companies in all but stopped about a year and a half ago.. I worked at a strip club but just for one night. egas is small so I didn’t want to run into friends or family friends. I started doing only fans which actually is more work than I thought it would be to promote myself but slowly I’m growing my subscribers. Tryst I can’t say one bad thing about. I started posting again on tryst about 6 months ago and have nothing but good things to say. The men are respectful and know what they want. I haven’t had any disrespectful clients and customer service is also great and a big help.
How has the industry changed since you started?
So I only started in the industry about 5 years ago. I actually started as a webcam model which I still do here and there but I originally started in a studio. I would go from wearing lingerie and talking to people online in a studio, to changing into my work suit and heading straight to the casino working in a very professional job setting. I then went on to work for escort companies. I found that 80% of the escort companies are mostly interested in making money so they dont screen calls the way they should, and don’t care too much about your safety. Working for myself has changed things for the better. I am able to pick and choose which calls I would like to take and I make sure that the dates I do go on the men are 100% verified so I’m not so afraid to go in to them like I use to be.
What was something you didn't expect going into the industry?
What I didn’t expect going into the industry was how many genuine and good people I would meet. I have met more good than bad. I'm someone who loves learning new things and a lot of the men I’ve spoken with either through facetime calls or in person are successful and I’ve actually had great conversations. Another thing that surprised me is while working for the companies was how common it was for them to post pictures of random women, answer the phone pretending to be the girl in the photo, then send anyone l who is available. Most of the time the person didn’t look even slightly close to the person in the photo. Also you're not supposed to say you work for a company but at the same time they want you to call to tell them you're checked in and call them every 15 minutes. This often made the clients uncomfortable.
We know sex workers often experience discrimination, what have your experiences been with this?
I keep this part of my life private. I do have family that does know about it but I just don't speak about it. I would say no matter what, people always have opinions. If you're doing good or doing bad, there's always someone with something to say. I can say I noticed even before I started working that everytime I have been in a casino the workers, security and even people passing by have looked at me as if I was working. I also was approached multiple times while gambling minding my business by men thinking I was working just because it’s so big in Las Vegas.
How do you deal with burn out? How do you recharge or take a break?
At first I wouldn’t give myself enough rest because I was going through a very hard time in my life and it was a way to keep my mind busy. I learned to now give myself the sleep I need every night because sleeping not only makes you feel and look better but overall makes for a better happier version of myself. The way I recharge myself is being around my family, organizing my stuff and my life, getting my nails or hair done, going to the gym, tanning and just pampering myself!
Were there any providers in particular that you look up to? Someone who inspires you & why?
Nobody in particular, I just look up to and respect a lot of the women who are in this industry that don’t hate on other women. I love to see everyone doing good and don't wish bad on anyone. Every man/ woman has a different taste/ fetish so women who realize that as well I have a lot of respect for.
What do you think the public should know about the sex industry?
I personally don’t think it should be looked down upon. I know that there is sex trafficking which I obviously don’t agree with at all but in the situation of a woman choosing to be a sex worker whether as an escort, stripper, webcam model, only fans etc. men should know to respect women’s boundaries which sadly isn't always done. As a sex worker you do as much as you’re comfortable with so I don't believe it should be looked at as illegal. In the end if it’s not a case of coercion or exploitation, there’s really nothing wrong with it.
What would you say to someone considering going into the industry?
Someone thinking about it would have to know that there is a lot which comes with it and it’s not for everyone. Unfortunately it can be very dangerous. I would let them know some of the things I’ve encountered. I would let them know if they do decide to work to be straight up with the services you are comfortable with so there’s never a misunderstanding. I would definitely consider tryst, webcam, only fans or stripping as options before others because to me these are the safest.
